Meet Aya…
Aya was born in 1999 in Tripoli, Lebanon. She received her BE in Computer and Communication Engineering from the American University of Beirut (AUB) with high distinction. She was constantly placed on the Dean’s honor list in recognition of academic excellence. She managed to balance her educational workload with the extra-curricular activities that helped her fulfill her aspirations. She was member of the Lebanese national higher conservatory of music and was a volunteer at AUB visitor’s bureau where she worked as a tour guide to inform visitors about AUB’s history and buildings.
Aya joined the Summer Student Research Fellowship program at ETH Zurich in Summer 2019. She did there a research internship in the Systems Group (Computer Science department). This experience not only promoted her research skills but also taught her how to interact with students from different cultures.
Aya is interested in Artificial intelligence for biomedical applications. Her research interests are enhancing the technologies used for diagnosis of tumors. She believes that intelligent machines are the future and that using the technological advancement in the medical field can lead to amazing inventions that help saving patients' lives. She will be joining Imperial College London bioengineering department to pursue her master’s degree in human and biological robotics. She hopes that this master will facilitate her path into PhD.
On the long term, Aya dreams of a research career in bioengineering where she can contribute to the community in the best way that she can. The scholarship that she received from Bseisu foundation will assist her greatly in her endeavours in times where her country Lebanon is sinking into a financial crisis.
“Growing up in a region affected by conflict and limited healthcare resources, I saw how vulnerable populations face significant barriers to accessing quality care. This experience has shaped my passion for healthcare and my desire to make a difference that serves my community.”
