Meet Heba…

Heba was born in Kafr Qara, which is located in Wadi Ara. She moved to Haifa to pursue her master's degree in Neurobiology. Heba really enjoys the views from the campus, which is situated at the top of Mount Carmel and says that the university provides a strong sense of community and belonging and allows students to maintain their identities.

Heba completed her undergraduate degree in BSc Biology and Political Science. During her degree, she also worked for a newspaper for 3 years. Although this was an unusual combination, it helped her to decide that she wanted to focus on biology. For her undergraduate project, Heba studied the attraction of female crickets to males living in changing light conditions. This project helped Heba to realise that she is more interested in molecular biology research than behavioural studies. This has led her to her current research project focused on studying Alzheimer's disease using non-invasive methods.

Heba plans to use focused ultrasounds to introduce a plasmid including the gene of the protein (EphB2) into the brain by disrupting the blood-brain barrier. She hopes that her work, in the far future, will help improve the brain function of patients.

Heba finds this field fascinating because the more it is studied, the more we realise how little we know. She chose to pursue an academic career because she has faith in science as the best way to understand how things work, including our brains, which control and regulate the entire organism.

Heba is just starting on her journey and has a long way to go. In the future, she hopes to continue learning, gain more knowledge, and give back to her community as much as possible.

“Growing up in a region affected by conflict and limited healthcare resources, I saw how vulnerable populations face significant barriers to accessing quality care. This experience has shaped my passion for healthcare and my desire to make a difference that serves my community.”
