Layan

Imperial College London, 2025-2026

Born and raised in Jordan, Layan Alkasaji developed an early curiosity about how science and engineering can be used to improve people’s lives. She later moved to the UAE to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Bioengineering at NYU Abu Dhabi, where she explored the intersection of engineering, medicine, and design within a highly international academic environment. During her studies, she worked on projects ranging from soft sensors for minimally invasive surgery to the design of a low-cost incubator for live-cell imaging, experiences that shaped her interest in applied, impact-driven research.

She is currently pursuing an MSc in Biomedical Engineering at Imperial College London as a Chevening–Bseisu Scholar, specialising in Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering. Through the programme, she aims to deepen her technical expertise while gaining exposure to innovation-driven research, with the long-term goal of developing accessible and sustainable medical technologies that can strengthen healthcare systems in Jordan and the wider region.

“I’m particularly interested in how material innovation can improve the performance and affordability of medical devices, and how these technologies can be translated into scalable industrial or commercial solutions.”
