Mai

University of Edinburgh, 2025-2026

Mai is a Palestinian MSc student in Analytical Chemistry at the University of Edinburgh. Originally from Gaza and raised in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, she has developed a strong interest in sustainability and the role of chemistry in addressing real-world challenges. She is particularly drawn to analytical chemistry for its wide-ranging applications, especially in water treatment and the pharmaceutical industry, often viewing it as the “joker” of chemistry due to its versatility across sectors.

Mai’s undergraduate degree in Chemistry helped shape her academic direction, especially through her graduation project on a solar-driven water desalination system, which deepened her interest in water sustainability and analytical methods for assessing water quality. Her strong performance and enjoyment of analytical chemistry courses further confirmed her decision to pursue this field at the postgraduate level.

She chose the University of Edinburgh for its well-structured and highly regarded Analytical Chemistry programme and its inspiring academic environment and its beautiful setting. Looking ahead, Mai hopes to contribute to environmentally sustainable solutions and the advancement of science education, with the long-term goal of making a positive impact for the people of Gaza.

“I aim to make a meaningful impact that benefits the people of Gaza.”
